Emergency Preparedness

Updated: Mar 28, 2023

Natural disasters have been increasing over the recent years. The best way to avoid further emergencies is to be prepared. If you have diabetes, it is important to take steps to prepare for emergencies. Here are some tips to help you prepare:

  1. Keep an emergency supply kit: Pack a kit with essentials such as glucose tablets or gels, a spare insulin pump or vials of insulin, a glucometer and extra test strips, snacks, and a cooler to keep insulin and other medicines at the right temperature. https://www.thediabeticdiabetesnurse.com/general-1

  2. Wear medical identification: Wear a medical ID bracelet or necklace that clearly states you have diabetes. This information can be critical in case of an emergency and you are unable to communicate.

  3. Inform others: Make sure family members, friends, coworkers, and others close to you know that you have diabetes and what to do in case of an emergency.

  4. Plan for power outages: Have a backup plan in case of a power outage, which could impact the ability to refrigerate insulin or use electronic medical devices. Keep a manual backup for your insulin pump, or have a supply of syringes and vials.

  5. Keep your glucose levels under control: Regular monitoring and controlling your glucose levels can help prevent emergencies.

  6. Have a glucagon emergency kit: If you take insulin, consider getting a glucagon emergency kit and make sure those close to you know how to use it in case of a severe hypoglycemic episode.

  7. Know the symptoms of hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia: Recognizing the signs and symptoms of low and high blood sugar levels is crucial in case of an emergency.

  8. Stay informed: Stay informed about weather and natural disasters that may impact your area and have a plan in place for how to manage your diabetes during these events.

By taking these steps, you can better prepare for emergencies and help ensure that you have the supplies and support you need to manage your diabetes in any situation.
